Children's village in Amdo

Matschen Dzong in Golok is situated some 4200 m above sea level, where the temperature can fall to below -30°C / -22°F in winter. The vegetation is very sparse, and no trees grow at this altitude. Golok is located in the Qinghai District in the former Tibetan province of Amdo and is mainly populated by nomads. Chinese settlers can be found at this altitude but not in the same numbers as in Kham. Given the complete absence of state institutions that could take care of orphans and abandoned children, we decided to construct our second Children's Village here.
